There are some very practical steps we can take to grow in the gifts of the Holy Spirit.
The foundation of all effective ministry is intimacy with God!
This is the most basic fundamental aspect of our walk as believers, our simple times of devotion to God are the foundation upon which everything else must be built.
Our Lord mad this very clear in his response to the question, Which is the most important command?
Jesus told him, “‘You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’
This is the greatest and most important commandment.
I’ve lost count how many times I’ve been ask to pray for a person to receive a greater sensitivity to God’s voice, but as much as I believe in impartation having hands laid on you cannot create an intimate relationship with God, this requires time space and practice and personal devotion.
In the same way the relationship between husband and wife grows with time, our relationship with God grows in the very same same way.
We learn to hear him better by simply communing with Him.
Deliberately devote time to simply be with him, put your prayer list of needs and dreams to one side and simply devote time to be with God.
Simply BE in his presence.
Read Study and Meditate on his written word.
This second point, Is again a vey obvious one yet it is truly shocking how little time believers spend reading the bible.
The written word is our plumb line for testing what we feel God is saying to us, also as we read and study the bible we gain insight into the ways God communicates with his people, it therefore stands to reason that if we want to be the carriers of his voice we must also be students of his word,
Sadly the reading of the bible is greatly neglected in our days,
Very few believers priorities the study, reading and meditation of the bible.
There is a major lack of hunger for the word of God and before we can be his voice we must first love his word for this is the wellspring for everything else.
Psalm 1:2-3 tells us we will flourish when we rooted in his word!
But he delights in the LORD’s instruction, and meditates in his instruction day and night.
He will be like a tree planted by streams of water, yielding its fruit in its season, and whose leaf does not wither. He will prosper in everything he does.
Be international in devoting time to ready the bible not just in the morning and evening, also makes peace through the day to spend time in his word even if it’s 15 minutes at lunch.
Pray in tongues
Tongues has to be one of the most neglected of all the gifts! I will devote a whole post to speak about this gift and it’s importance later, so I will only cover a few basic points here.
Firstly since every gift of the Spirit is given as the Spirit wills we should take note how important the gift must be as the Holy Spirit has given us access t this gift whenever we desire,
Many of the old time revivalists called the gift of tongues the gate gift, meaning we literally open the way for the other gifts to function when we devote time to utilising this wonderful gift,
Paul makes it clear that he expected wisdom revelation instruction and prophecy to flow as a result of the gift being utilised.
1Co 14:6 Now, brothers and sisters, if I come to you speaking in tongues, how will I benefit you unless I speak to you in some revelation or knowledge or prophecy or teaching?
Make a point of devoting time to speaking in tongues, be intentional and seek to see the time you spend speaking in tongues increase, I guarantee that as you do you will be amazed by what begins to take place in your relationship with God.
Threefold Lifestyle Goal
So there you have it, three simple things you can do to grow in the Prophetic and the Spirit filled life.
Devote time to worship,
Devote time to the bible,
Devote time to speaking in tongues,
Lord I pray you would flood my heart again with increasing love for you,
I ask you to fill me with a passion for your written word
And I pray that as I devote increasing time to praying in tongues that you will release wisdom and revelation into my heart and mind and that the many gifts you have given me will be stored up into action!
